Direct-to-Film (DTF) is a revolutionary digital printing method used for decorating products that bridges the gap between traditional screen printing and modern digital garment printing (DTG).

Unlike Direct-to-Garment (DTG) printing - which prints ink directly onto the product - or screen printing, which uses stenciles and thick inks, DTF prints a full-color design onto a specialized clear PET film. Once printed, the design has a heat-activated adhesive powder, Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU), that can be pressed onto virtually any type of fabric or product.

The secret ingredient behind DTF prints and durability is the TPU. Polyurethane is an incredibly resilient polymer that combines the mechanical properties of hard plastics with the elasticity of rubber.

DTF inks are formulated with highly flexible acrylic and polyurethane resins. Traditional screen print inks (like plastisol) sit thick on top of the fabric and can easily crack when pulled. Because DTF inks are microscopic pigments suspended in a flexible polymer base, they stretch with the underlying TPU layer and fabric.

Digital Print
- A specialized inkjet printer uses advanced textile inks to mirror the design onto the translucent release film.
Powder & Cure
- While the ink is still wet, the film passes through and has TPU powder applied across the back of the print.
Heat Transfer
- On a heat press, the product and the printed sheet are placed together and pressed. This melts the TPU adhesive, creating a tight grip and interlocking with the fabric fibers. Once the sheet is peeled off, the ink layer completely transfers to the product, leaving a flawless, vibrant graphic.

Unmatched versatility: Unlike sublimation (which requires 100% polyester) or DTG (which requires high-percentage cotton), DTF works flawlessly on cotton, polyester, nylon, canvas, denim, leather, blends, and soft promo goods like mousepads and koozies.

Incredible durability: Rated for 50+ commercial washes without cracking, fading, or peeling.

Soft hand feel: Because the ink layer is incredibly thin and flexible, it doesn’t feel like a heavy plastic shield on your chest. It moves naturally with the garment.

Vibrant, high-resolution detail: It handles fine lines, tiny text, complex gradients, and photorealistic designs with ease—no matter what color background it is pressed onto.
